What to do in holidays in Les Gets without ski lifts this winter ?
We discovered this year, more than ever, the resort of Les Gets is so much more than a ski resort. The ski lifts were closed during Xmas and NY weeks and for the moment in January too, but holidaymakers enjoyed the mountain in a different way, as it has so much to offer apart from alpine skiing.
We hope, as you all do, that the slopes will open soon, which should be confirmed around the 20th of January. In the meantime, we will explain why we think Les Gets is an ideal resort to spend a great holiday in the mountains even without skiing!
Between a special atmosphere in the heart of the village, a mountain of activities for young and old, amazing gastronomy for all palates which has been adapted to the sanitary constraints and sublime landscapes, everything is there to come and relax with friends or family for a real breath of fresh air in the mountains.
A multitude of activities to enjoy
Ski touring, you don't need a ski lift to go skiing
The mountain has to be earned and ski touring or split board (snowboard version of ski touring) is proof of this. What could be more exhilarating than climbing the snowy slopes with the help of adapted equipment and then savouring the long awaited descent! Whether you're a piste enthusiast or rather a fan of fresh snow, the discipline is suitable for everyone.
A guide is strongly recommended if you discover this practice, who recommends caution and sound advice (avalanche risks, safety rules, routes adapted to your level and physical fitness, technical advice with the equipment, etc.) Ski schools such as the ESF and the International Ski School 360 offer ski touring outings, so don't hesitate to contact them.
We invite you to enquire at shops such as Berthet Sport to hire the best equipment including skis, ski touring bindings, skins and poles. We also work with Ski Mobile, a qualified team offering delivery of equipment directly to your chalet.
Note: It is forbidden to ski touring on the Perrières pistes, both uphill and downhill.
Cross-country skiing, traditional skiing
Nordic skiing, which has often been neglected in recent years, is making a strong comeback this winter. Take advantage of kilometres of Nordic ski slopes in the resort of Les Gets, on Les Chavannes Sides (Mont-Chéry side is not open for the moment). Playful, sporty and contemplative at the same time, this sport will delight young and old alike.
Nothing better than a lesson with a guide or a certified instructor to discover the somewhat different technique of alpine skiing.
Alpine skiing for toddlers and beginners
In order to introduce the youngest to alpine skiing, the schools have been inventive and offer "First slides" courses and the Piou-Piou area is open.
In addition, from Saturday 16th of January, the Chavannes carpet will be open until the beginning of the February holidays on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 12.30pm and from 1.30pm to 4pm.
Access free of charge. The carpet is only accessible to skiers equipped with downhill skis. Pedestrians are not allowed. The mask is obligatory for anyone aged 11 and over in the queue and on the device.
Information subject to change with regard to regulatory and operating constraints.
Hiking and snowshoeing in the snow
With two magnificent slopes, the resort of Les Gets offers different landscapes on both sides for those who love hiking and snowshoeing, without risk and for all levels.
Stroll around the lake, admire the Mont-Blanc from Mont-Caly, go deep into the heart of the fir trees in Sincerneret, hiking boots or snowshoes on your feet. There is something for everyone and something to take a breath of fresh air all week long! Don't hesitate to ask us for our favorite spots, we will be delighted to share them with you.
The tourist office provides you with a map and a detailed presentation of the different itineraries, also available in paper form, which we will give you on your arrival. The paths are all signposted and maintained by the ski lift company, SAGETS. Some of the walks will not be accessible this winter, please contact the Tourist Office in Les Gets if you have any doubts.
You can also organise an outing with an approved mountain guide who will concoct an outing adapted to your wishes while discovering the local fauna and flora in a grandiose setting.
For snowshoe hire, we invite you to get in touch with the sports shops in the resort of Les Gets.
Dog sledging, hiking dogs, and dog baby taxi
At Mont-Caly or La Sarre, thanks to Didier and his 8 sled dogs, discover the mountain differently. Sled dog activity for children from 5 to 12 years old. For adults, Didier offers dog-hiking : a hike harnessed to a dog for 1h30. Group of 4 people from the same family or from the same group maximum according to sanitary constraints.
Snow, a playground in all its forms
Numerous toboggan runs are accessible in the village below Les Chavannes and Les Perrières. We can provide you some during your stay.
The playground areas Bankids (behind the tourist office) and Wildkids (opposite the bottom of the Chavannes express chairlift) for children are also open every day free of charge. There's plenty of fun to be had on the inflatable modules!
Going down the snowy slopes on a Fat Bike
Discover the fat bike equipped with adapted tyres for downhill or snow and ice riding, a real experience. Information at Intersport shop opposite the Chavannes Express and The Hub shop.
Electric snowmobiles: a positive environmental activity for the little ones
An environmentally friendly activity, electric snowmobiles are accessible from 5 to 17 years old, on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays outside school holidays and 6 days/week during the French school holidays, from 10am to 5pm, near the Lac des Ecoles under the Chavannes Express.
A lot of activities in the village
Stroll through the streets of the village to do shopping in the sports or souvenir shops. Taste the local flavours at the traditional Thursday morning market, skate in the heart of the village, or discover the incredible world of the Mechanical Music Museum and its 350 exhibits, everything is gathered in Les Gets for an authentic stay rich in experiences.
In addition, the resort organises numerous events during the school holidays, such as the Christmas and New Year holidays if the slopes remain closed, as well as workshops for young and old alike, such as the creation of fir tree syrups, aromatic soaps, woodworking, wooden games, orienteering in the snow with the little trappers, etc. Unfortunately, for the moment we are not aware of the opening of Alta Lumina.
Finally, take a tour among our local actors such as the pottery workshop in Lassarre or the Gêtoises farms to buy and taste local cheeses at La ferme de Caroline, La Chèvrerie des Félires, la chèvrerie des Ours, la fruitière des Perrières or the farm Les Pâtres des reines.
Holidays under the sign of greediness
To start the day off right, have your bread and pastries delivered directly to your chalet each morning by our team. Then, if you wish to enjoy the mountains and go home to put your feet under the table, what better way to start than to call on the services of a Chef at Domicile. They can deliver your meals to you, as well as our partners who specialise in home meal delivery such as Bon Appetit and Dining Direct.
Would you like to try our restaurants? Many of them offer take-away or home delivery services at an additional cost. The resort of Les Gets is particularly renowned for its high gastronomic standards at reasonable prices.
Relaxation and well-being during your stay
Because holidays also rhyme with relaxation, don't hesitate to go to one of the well-being institutes in the resort of Les Gets such as Clair Moment and Sérénicimes to enjoy the fairy fingers of our spa practitioners.
The Spa des Sources du Chéry cannot reopen its pools for the moment, however, massages are also open for booking every day. And if you prefer to take advantage of your chalet, mobile massage companies will come to your home for a pure moment of relaxation at home.
We also have a blog on the subject of relaxing holidays in Les Gets, read it to find out more!
Our team lives in Les Gets all year round and will be happy to answer your questions about the resort, its services and the activities you can do during the school holidays. The snow conditions are incredible this year, so you might as well take advantage of the many activities available outside of skiing!
