What to do on holiday in Les Gets without ski lifts this winter?

We discovered this year, more than ever, Les Gets is so much more than a ski resort. The ski lifts were closed during Xmas and NY weeks and for most of January too, but holidaymakers enjoyed the mountain in a different way, as it has so much to offer apart from alpine skiing.

The village has a special atmosphere and there are plenty of activities for young and old. Although the restaurants are closed, many offer take-away food or make deliveries. We have had some delicious meals from local restaurants.

What to do on holiday in Les Gets without ski lifts this winter?

A multitude of activities to enjoy

Ski touring shows you don't need a ski lift to go skiing!

The mountain 'has to be earned' and ski touring or split board (snowboard version of ski touring) is proof of this. What could be more exhilarating than climbing the snowy slopes with the help of adapted equipment and then savouring the long awaited descent! Whether you're a piste enthusiast or a fan of fresh snow, this sport is suitable for everyone.

A guide is strongly recommended if you have not ski-toured before. They will assess your ability and lead you along routes comfortably within your ability, they will also explain some of the important things you need to know, for example,  on avalanche risks, safety rules, and technical advice on using the equipment.  Ski schools such as the ESF and the International Ski School 360 offer ski touring outings, so don't hesitate to contact them.

Equipment can be hired from shops such as Berthet Sport, they offer: skis, ski touring bindings, skins and poles. We also work with Ski Mobile, a qualified team offering delivery of equipment directly to your chalet.

Note: It is forbidden to go ski touring on the Perrières pistes.

Cross-country skiing, traditional skiing

Nordic skiing, which has often been neglected in recent years, is making a strong comeback this winter. You can take advantage of many kilometres of Nordic ski slopes in the resort of Les Gets, on the Les Chavannes side (the Mont-Chéry side is not open at the moment). Try biathlon practice with ESF Les Gets to combine cross-country skiing and air rifle target shooting !

Take a lesson with a guide or a certified instructor to discover the different techniques of alpine skiing.

Alpine skiing for toddlers and beginners

In order to introduce the youngest to alpine skiing, the schools have been inventive and offer "First slides" courses and the Piou-Piou area is open.

In addition, from Saturday 16th of January, the Chavannes magic carpet will be open until the beginning of the February holidays on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 12.30pm and from 1.30pm to 4pm.
Access free of charge. The magic carpet is only accessible to skiers equipped with downhill skis. Pedestrians are not allowed. A mask is obligatory for anyone aged 11 and over in the queue and on the device.
