January 2018...so far

January 2018...so far
Saturday, 27 January 2018

Like every winter month in Les Gets, January has certainly been eventful. Although Les Gets is a small town, it has charm by the bundle and there is nearly always something going on. Like many other ski resort towns in the Alps, the year 2018 was kicked off with an impressive fireworks display over the town, followed by celebrations in the many pubs and bars continuing through to the early hours of the New Year’s day. The Chalets1066 team spent the night at their local, the brilliant ‘Bar Bush’, which is situated near the main village square. Bar Bush is a friendly and welcoming place, popular with British seasonaires. The owner and barman, known locally as ‘Cindy’ knows how to liv...

Why Les Gets is the best resort in the world to learn to ski.

Why Les Gets is the best resort in the world to learn to ski.
Wednesday, 18 October 2017

Article by Ben Nathan, ISIA qualified ski instructor: Every resort is different to teach in, some favour beginners, some intermediates and some advanced skiers. Les Gets offers the best value, to those wanting to learn to ski, as it has pistes which support learning at every level of skill and so means one can gain skiing skills faster and to a stronger level, than other resorts. This applies not just to someone new to skiing, but also to experienced skiers wanting to further hone their skills. The key to learning strong skiing skills, as quickly as possible, is to progress gradually, practicing at each level. All beginners start on the nursery slopes, where there is a ‘magic carpet’...

Winter Activities other than Skiing
Friday, 29 September 2017

There is a misconception that ski resorts are only for skiers and snowboarders but over the year there are a number of activities that have become very popular with both skiers and non-skiers alike. The authentic, charming village of Les Gets offers a host of non skiing activities starting with an ice rink situated in the heart of the village. Once the pistes close for the day this ice rink becomes a hive of activity. Boots can be hired or you can bring your own and the rink is lit up brightly and as the rink is outdoors the whole village gathers around the rink to watch the fun. The rink is also open in the afternoon. Local restaurants have a steady supply of hot chocolate and hot wine on...

Why Les Gets

Why Les Gets
Monday, 04 September 2017

Les Gets is popular because it offers an intimate, authentic French atmosphere. The small, attractive, family-friendly resort offers a genuine Savoyard experience. The main street is lined with appetising food and wine shops that specialise in the local produce. The two main pistes (Chavannes and Mont Chery) both begin and end in the village itself, making access very easy. The base of the Chavannes piste offers specially designated slopes for sledding - a winter sport the whole family can enjoy. The village has a quiet ambience that appeals to families. This is not to say that the village does not cater to all types of guest as there are a variety of bars and a nightclub to liven up your a...

Christmas and New Year in Les Gets

Christmas and New Year in Les Gets
Sunday, 03 September 2017

Did you know that Father Christmas lives in Les Gets? It is one of the best kept secrets in the Portes du Soleil. He and his faithful elves live together in their grotto, a log cabin hidden deep in the middle of an enchanted forest high above the village. In this magical place they work all year round making toys and presents for Christmas. If you are lucky you may catch a glimpse of him with his elves as you stroll through the village. Should you miss him in the village, there is still a unique chance to meet him and his elves in the enchanted forest. This is something the whole family can enjoy. Take the shuttle bus from the Santa station in the village centre to his grotto in the Enchant...

I have ridden just about every make of motorcycle you can imagine, Kawasakis,Triumphs, BMW etc, but never a Harley. The opportunity presented itself to me at the amazing spectacle that is Harley Days here in the Alps at Morzine. I am going to be honest with you in that I've had my preconceptions about Harley's being slow, agricultural, heavy and well not very good around corners. My day started at 6am (that’s correct 6am!!) where I collected my kit and flags. We were given a briefing on what to do, a map which indicated your position (between 1-27 posts). Lost and Found

Lost and Found
The Chalets1066 Team Wednesday, 09 March 2016

Two weeks ago, some of our guests included a little girl called Sophie and her favourite teddy.  In the stress of getting belongings together and leaving the chalet at the end of the week, the teddy was left behind. This was heartbreaking to Sophie and her family, since she can’t sleep without it.  The teddy was found by the cleaning team and returned to the chalets1066 office, who then made a valiant effort to ensure that it was returned. It was sent by post back to the UK, and the pair were happily reunited a number of days later.   Last week we were sent a short video of Sophie saying thank you, with the teddy in its rightful place, with her.  https://youtu.be/fZ...

If you think that ice hockey matches involve fights, blood, violence - then you’d be right. If you’re an avid ice hockey fan then this is the place to be every week, but if you’re more interested in the drama that unfurls on the ice then this provides more entertainment than the you could ever want.  If that isn’t enough for you then the kiss-cam, which forces strangers to become better acquainted, is another source of quality entertainment.  So if you fancy an alternative evening activity then this is the place to be. If you’re lucky the lovely gentlemen from apres will continue to light your fire over a hot drink of zante.  In all seriousness though, this is an event that shouldn’t be missed.  On the topic of things not to be missed, the Alps isn’t just for skiing, with events like Crankworx and L’tappe de tour, Les Gets ...

Are you afraid of the dark? Spiders? or even heights? Does snow make the fear of heights go away? What about a parachute, will that make you feel more at ease? Here in Les Gets you will notice the sheer amount of paraglider’s littering the sky.  Beautiful and majestic or terrifying? I’m going to say terrifying.   I can just hear my mum’s voice ‘don’t judge a book by its’ cover’ cutting through my complaints, so I decided to do some research into it.  I’d like to say that this is a blog all about how I tried paragliding, but funding wasn’t an option so I decided to weigh out the pros and cons of the terrifying sport. Much safer.  Pro - You can see beaut...

Pound Strengthens Versus Euro - Holidays in Les Gets fall in price
Mark Monday, 14 September 2015

Do you plan to take a holiday in stunning Les Gets, in the French Alps? If so, it may interest you to know that staying in a chalet in the Alps will now leave less of a dent in your bank balance. This is because the pound to euro exchange rate recently hit 1.36, close to its strongest in 7.5 years, or since October 5th 2007. What this means for you is that, when you exchange currencies to holiday in the French Alps, you'll get far more euros. For example, if you exchange £2,500 into euros, you’ll now get +€400 more than if you’d visited Les Gets back at the start of 2014, when the pound was far weaker. In other words, that's an extra +€400 sitting in your pocket, at no cost to you...

Two new ski lifts last ski season proved to be a great success when they opened last ski season and meant that those staying in Les Gets could get faster and easier access to the rest of the Portues du Soleil: The new Pleney lift is not only much faster and has greater capacity, it also is much easier to get on and off and there are no steps at bottom or top – the entrance and exit are at street and piste levels. The new Prodan lift is a much faster route directly to Avoriaz The new 6 man Troncs ski lifts also was much faster and smoother The picture opposite is of the Pleney ski lift as it was in the 1930's – we have come a long way since then!...

Preparing the Piste and the Lifts

Preparing the Piste and the Lifts
Mark Thursday, 14 August 2014

This is a new video showing the work that goes into preparation and management of the pistes, and the ski lifts in the Les Gets area. The video is fascinating.Clearly, all the people who manage the pistes are highly skilled – and they do an excellent job. The end result is that the quality of the piste is very good in Les Gets, the queues at the lifts are relatively short and the area is relatively safe.Of interest - I have sat on the 'red eye' plane a few times, on an early Monday morning going from Geneva to London - chatting to people who have been to the high resorts, only for them to tell me that the snow is 'blown off', that the conditions are so bad it is hard to ski or that they sp...

Some Summer Activities in Les Gets
Mark Monday, 26 May 2014

Summer 2014: Les Gets looks set for another fantastic summer with a very wide range of events and activities, from amazing mountain biking to the lounge music festival and the international festival of mechanical music. Some of the latest news of what is on is: Mountain Biking: Les Gets has three new tracks:• The Red Cross Trail – this is from the top of the Chavannes Express lift, across the top of Lea Rosta, then down to the Mouillie Ronde forest road and back to Les Gets village.• Blue Trail on the Chavannes – this is a short run in the Grany Cry area.• Freeride on Mont Chery – this starts from the top of the bubble lift and is another run down Mont Chery Additionally, the...

Les Gets end March - wonderful

Les Gets end March - wonderful
Mark Wednesday, 26 March 2014

It has been snowing most of the day in Les Gets, temperatures are cold and the snow is settling. The snow making machines have also been hard at work overnight. This is a brilliant time for taking a ski holiday, there are no queues at the lifts, the pistes are quiet, and the conditions are excellent. The picture opposite was taken of the Granges Piste earlier today, just after lunch. The pistes were so quiet that even after lunch, in parts, you could still see the combing from the piste machines. The Chavannes piste had two very different goups on it: today there was the 'wacky races' - where seasonaires dress up in fancy dress and ski for the afternoon, and also most of the local school c...

The Season has started!

The Season has started!
Mark Sunday, 29 December 2013

The ski season has started with quite a bang. Yesterday the snow was excellent, we went skiing in the afternoon – the snow was soft to the end of the day.Early evening we had a little slush falling in the village (snow falling on the mountains) and then this all turned to snow. By around 10.00 in the evening the roads were 20cm deep in places; one group said that on the transfer from Geneva there must have been 100 vehicles abandoned. Busses and normal vehicles could not get up the Chavannes Road so we had to ferry customers up in our Defender – many had delayed journeys due to the snow....

Les Gets is better than the Caribbean in the Summer

Les Gets is better than the Caribbean in the Summer
Wednesday, 04 September 2013

Having just spent part of the summer in Les Gets, my feeling is that I just have to share some of it with those who have not yet allowed themselves the indulgence of a visit there. Where to start? It's a toughie, I have to say. One of the things that I loved the most and was most impressed by is not only the amount of FAMILY activities, but, that by all accounts and purpose, all ages and stages and needs and wants are catered for in this region. From mountain biking (or cross country) to horse riding, swimming in the mountain lakes, Alpine walking - parapenting – which I did, with my 23 year old daughter, specifically because I am afraid of height's – and I ABSOLUTELY loved it..........

I had a great time in the Pump Park in Les Gets
Monday, 02 September 2013

I have really enjoyed myself in the pump park and using the air bag in Les Gets this summer – with my new mountain bike. The pump park is not only a great way to practice skills, but is also really good for socialising with other English kids of my age (11 years ). In the daytime, most kids are out on the mountains, but in the evenings, the lifts are closed so most kids go to the pump park and this is a great place to make friends. One of the good things about the pump park is that it is free, but never seems to be too busy....

Preparing for Summer 2013

Preparing for Summer 2013
Mark Tuesday, 09 July 2013

We now have a very strong team at Chalet Hastings for the summer – Morven is running operations on site, Ben will be spending the summer doing a lot of the much needed jobs – gardening, painting and the many other maintenance jobs needed. In addition, Morven's mother Sharon is spending the summer in Les Gets, as she will be helping during the ski season and this seemed an ideal opportunity for her to gain an understanding of the operation before the high pressure of the winter season, Mani, Morven's brother is also in Les Gets for the summer – with his new bike – with the plan of becoming expert at downhilling....

Bens Ski Race Training in June

Bens Ski Race Training in June
Sunday, 30 June 2013

I have just come back from two weeks training, on the glacier at Les Deux Alpes, for the Test Technique and the infamous Euro Speed Test. To teach in France requires the highest qualifications in the world for a ski instructor, the Euro Test is well known as being very hard to pass, however, the Test Technique is a lower level and, if you pass this, and have BASI 2, you are allowed to work as a Stagaiare for ESF for up to 5 years. The course was organised by Podium Ski, I have been training for my ski instructor qualifications for two and a half years, this was my first course with Podium and I have to say that they are outstanding. The course was intense, very demanding, great fun and made f...

Planning for Summer in Les Gets?

Planning for Summer in Les Gets?
Mark Sunday, 02 June 2013

We first visited Les Gets in the summer, for a mountain biking holiday. We had mountain biked in most areas in the UK, we have also been to the Rockies, it was clear that Les Gets is by far the best location in the world, there is a fantastic range of beautiful routes right on your door step, there are real mountains and traditional villages. No where else in the world has all this. However, Les Gets is not just the best for Mountain Biking, it appeals to many interests, from relaxing by the lake, gentle walks taking advantage of the lifts, to road cycling – where you can ride some of the famous climbs of the Tour de France, climbing, paragliding and horst riding to name just a few of the ...

A Wonderful Week in Les Gets!
Saturday, 16 March 2013

We visited Les Gets in January and stayed in the Le Laype catered chalet. We had a fantastic holiday and were extremely well looked after by the whole Chalets 1066 team all week! We booked our airport transfers through Chalets 1066 and our driver, Andy, was there waiting for us at the airport and took us to our chalet. When we arrived, Laurie, our chalet host, was there to greet us and show us around the chalet, which was lovely. Everything we needed was there, it all felt clean and fresh, and it was all made warm and cosy with a log fire, with a brilliant view of the mountains....

Our rental skiing gear was also already in the chalet waiting to be tried on. Ski mobile then phoned to take any details about how well things fitted. They returned first thing in the morning to fit us with helmets and to bring other boot sizes. In the evening we had a lovely dinner and got to know the other guests. We are sharing the chalet with five other guests, all of whom are extremely friendly....

L’Encrenaz Cafe on Mont Chery
Sunday, 27 January 2013

Some of the hardier families will be fifteen minutes early for the first lift up in the morning, whatever the weather. Hours of intense skiing follow. The piste map was carefully studied the night before, and is now covered in biro, solved like a dot-to-dot problem. It guides the group across the mountains, ticking off run after run. The operation has militaristic efficiency. Come midday, the group is tired. They might take shelter with pre-packed baguettes and thermos flask. And the weaker among them might look longingly at another family below them. This family is heading into a restaurant, ready, after a leisurely ski, to soak themselves for an hour in espressos, vins chaud, pression...

While the Chavannes side of Les Gets is busy, today I spent a couple of hours on Mont Chery and there were no queues at the lifts at all. When you get to the top of the 'bubble' lifts going up Mont Chery, there is a telescope and amazing views over Les Gets village.Mont Chery does not have the large number of pistes as the Chavannes side, but I find these all to be good, my favourite is Marmottes – on the far side of the Mountain – this is mostly wide, not a hard red, and at the bottom you can chose between a black and a red – the black goes past a café – it is not really a black at all – just a continuation of the red – and the stop off at the café is well worth it. It was snowing all last night, the temperature plummeted and it did not stop until around 10.00 this morning. There is around 3 inches or 10cm of snow on the balcony outside the Chalet, long icicles by reception and the whole village has turned into Narnia overnight. We were due to have workmen arrive at the Chalet to finish of some of the renovation works, but they could not get to us as they were snowed in, we will be making plans to ensure they can get to us to finish off the renovation works in time for the start of the ski season. As we are between seasons, the roads are not cleared, so we are certainly thankful we have a 4 wheel drive vehicle. The picture opposite was from Chalet Hastin...

On main Hastings Chalet, we are having new doors fitted on the ground floor, and new tiling to the sauna area, this should make the whole building warmer (as the new doors have very good draft sealing) and improve the appearance of the sauna area. New Ski lift at Chamossier

New Ski lift at Chamossier

Yesterday and today we tried the new ski lift at Chamossier... The good news is that this is very fast - one of the fastest lifts we have experienced - and from the top of Chamossier you can ski right down to the area where there are a number of restaurants at the bottom of the Chamossier express - so this is a very long run. On the first day we tried this, there was a lot of mist at the middle level, once we were above the midst the sky was clear blue and you could see for miles. With the new lift, you come out a little lower than the old lift - but the speed is fantastic. Yesterday the Chamossier was excellent - but today it was just too popular - so we went over to the 'bowl' which was...
