Summer in Les Gets
Beautiful alpine views, walking in the mountains, resting by the lake, mountain biking, paragliding, French food...what more could you want.
We firmly believe that in Les Gets offers the best for a summer activity holiday - it has the best mountain biking by far, the walks and climbing are amazing, there is breath-taking scenery and if you don't feel like a high energy activity you can relax either the lakes in Les Gets or Montriond. The following gives a summary
Mountain Biking in Les Gets
Les Gets, without question, has the best mountain biking in the world, there is a fantastic variety - genuinely something for everyone. There are wonderful cross country routes with fantastic scenery and Les Gets has been the location of the downhill world championships. The ride to Switzerland is a good day out - if you leave at around 09.00 there is time for a good hour's lunch and you will typically be back by 5.00. The lifts mean you can cover a far greater distance in one day.In Les Gets you can literally roll out of bed, jump on your bike, roll down the hill and you are at the lifts. There is a great variety of riding. When we went to the Rockies for a mountain bike holiday - we had to drive in a van for an hour every day, the scenery was boring, there were no interesting villages and the riding was all the same and very mediocre.
Each year there are usually a series of mountain and road bike events for both professionals and for everyone to partake. In 2010 the Tour de France came through Les Gets and Lance Armstrong has to dismount outside Bar Bush to avoid a crash.
For those who have had walking holidays in the Lake district, Les Gets is simply amazing. You can chose from gentle walks, to have something which is close on climbing, to serious mountain climbing. On some walks there are chains fitted to help climb/descent and there is also the Via Ferrata - wires fixed to the side of the mountains which you clip onto - making it safe for those with no experience to scale high mountains.
Les Gets has an excellent golf course, with views of Mont Blanc, although we are not golfers ourselves, we hear very good reports of the course and there have been some significant investments over the last couple of years.
In the summer there are usually many events, some of the highlights, to us, are:Festival of mechanical music - whilst this may sound to be an unusual event - it is actually amazing - three full days of the village being filled with people making music using mechanical instruments.Dance Festivals - in 2010 there was a three day festival at Avoriaz and there were free group lessons all day - great fun from total beginner to those who are accomplished.Harley Davidson Festival - this was held this year in Morzine, there was also Status Quo playing for the evening.
Lake and Children's activities
On the Chavannes side, there is a lake in the summer with lifeguards on duty and events organised for children, usually every day.
